Structural Vibrations

After class today, I went on youtube and found a few cool videos of structural vibratins. Well... they are pretty cool as long as you are not in the structure.

Notes... help!

I added some more to the notes, specifically on the unforced solution to a spring-mass-damper system. In exchange for these tidbits of knowledge, I'd like to ask for your comments. I'm creating these on my tablet, so I can go back and make changes, corrections, and additions. Is there something that's confusing or lacking detail? Let me know.

Welcome, Spring 2013

Welcome back...

A few annouoncements:

In an attempt to escape the bowels of Buckingham, the classroom has been tentatively changed to ASEC 304. Ideally, we will find a larger room but that remains to be seen. Hopeful I am not.

I added the notes on mechanics (ME431-notes.pdf) to the website, under the ME 431 Notes page, surprisingly enough.

The University seems to be having network issues. Not sure why, but hopefully it will be fixed soon. So if you can't access this website in the future, be patient and try again. Obviously you are reading it now, so at worst the connectivity is intermittent.

Lyric of the day

Hold my hand

Snow days

Ahhh... snow... and ice. Thankfully, and I'm sure that you all feel the same, classes will resume on Thursday. The homework that was originally due on Wednesday will be due on Friday instead. However, solutions will also be posted on Friday as well, so no late homework (on Monday for example) will be accepted. Then quiz will be held on Monday as originally scheduled. Meanwhile... some good things do come from Kent.

Homework and Quiz, 04 Feb 2011

Hi all,

Due to the snow days I am going to extend the homework due date to Monday. However, the solutions will still be made available on that day so there will be no late homework accepted. Also, the quiz that was scheduled for today will be held on Friday instead.

OK Go

As promised in class, I found the video for the OK Go Rube Goldberg machine. It is absolutely brilliant. These things rely on the repeatability described by Dynamics. Balls roll and bounce exactly where the are supposed to roll and bounce... water flows in just the same way every time... people fly through the air...

Very very cool...

Kinematics Quizes

These kinematics problems are time consuming. I cannot realistically expect you to analyze the position, velocity, and acceleration of a mechanism within the 15 minutes available for a quiz. Therefore, when the problem involves the velocity and/or acceleration I will typically given you the configuration (position) of the mechanism. This should dramatically reduce the time required for the problem.
