the first problem in the compiled problems does not have a -mg in the sum of the forces on the block. Should it have it or am i missing something else?

The reason that gravity is not included in the free body diagrams on some problems is that it will cancel out any initial static deflection of the springs (if there are any in the problem and all the springs must also be vertical). Its is briefly covered on pages 94-96 of the Vibes book and i think somewhere in the 60s in the SD&R book.
